Heat (1995)

In Michael Mann’s classic film, Lieutenant Hanna (Al Pacino), an obsessive LAPD detective, pursues professional thief Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) as the latter attempts one last heist before retirement. Despite their mutual respect, both Hanna and McCauley are willing to sacrifice their lives in the line of duty.

While the iconic action sequences are a highlight of “Heat,” it also explores how Hannah and Macaulay’s lives have consumed their work. As Hannah becomes obsessed with bringing Macaulay down, his work takes a toll on his relationship with his wife (Diane Verona) and stepdaughter (Natalie Portman), making for a gripping crime epic.
